The holidays is a SUPER fun time for costumes and celebrations. Here are three easy/fun ideas that you can achieve in minutes.

1. MAKE-UP

Using make-up instead of a full costume helps you transition from daily task as well as not committing to a full character get up.

Lot's of make-up companies even print the full directions for you on the back of the product so you don't have to be a professional artist to create the look. Just follow the company directions and change colors if necessary.

2. WIGS and ACCESSORIES

You have no idea how dramatic a simple wig and some accessories can change a person and create a character.

DIY a cool pirate patch and use a colorful wig. If you want to truly create the look mix some cocoa butter and black eye shadow together. Dab along jawline, nose, under eye, and forehead.

3. MASK

These are super easy to make, no make-up, and you can take them off at anytime.

Simply purchase an inexpensive pair of glasses. using flowers, beads, chains, buttons, and glue create the design of your choosing. You can even pop the glass out of the frames if you wish.

NAILING THINGS DOWN

Hello Everyone,

Things are moving forward in a very good way over here at SAJATA-E FOR D2BD. SAJATA-E KNIT'S is up and running which is a very good thing. Collecting all of my live tutorials and putting them in Video/PDF has been a challenge. A good challenge but a challenge none the less.

If you remember we pulled a few of our online tutorials and I got a lot of emails about that. No worries they will be coming back along with some very fun and wacky new designs. Things will be distributed in a new way and you will see little changes here and there in the near future.

LEARN TO KNIT

Recycle Egg Carton Paper

You will need:
1 Paper making kit [buy this from any craft store]
1 Square bucket
1 Package of reusable dust clothes
1 Blender
1 Strainer
1 Paper egg carton
1 Pot
1 Pair of scissors
2 Wooden boards
2 Clamps
1 Metal hanger and clothes pins

Step1

Using your scissors cut egg cartons into small pieces and place into pot.

Step 2

Fill pot with water and boil for an hour. After an hour of boiling remove pot from heat. Pour egg carton pieces into strainer.

Step 3

Place egg carton pieces into your blender. Fill blender half way with warm water. Blend into pulp.

Step 4

Pour your pulp into your bucket then fill your bucket half way with water.

Step 5

Using your paper making frame kit place into bucket and shift pulp onto frame. Lift frame from water and place aside.

Step 6

Place one board down then place one cloth on top of board. Lift your frame and carefully remove mesh screen from the middle. Carefully flip screen onto cloth then remove leaving your wet paper onto cloth. Repeat step 5 and 6 until all your pulp is gone.

Step 7

After you have all of your paper lying on your board place second board on top and squeeze all the water out using clamps on both sides. After all the water is squeezed out remove clamps and lift top board.

Step 8

Lift each cloth from your board and pin onto your hanger using clothes pins. Let paper on cloth fully dry before removal.

Step 9

After your paper has fully dried remove cloth from hanger and carefully peel paper from cloth.

Summer is approaching quickly and I am hard at work trying to stock with the Summer collection. We spin it like Gandi over here at the SAJATA-E FOR D2BD Studio. Fashion Can I…

Designer Update:

So I have been working on uploading the first pieces for fall 2010 and finishing up the patterns for our second pattern book. Yes this is actually our second pattern book that is being released. The first was released four years ago and we pulled the online patterns from the book to produce an updated re-write that will be released free with our designer yarns and available for purchase along with two new patterns.

I was setting up the setting for the fashion shoot today while blasting the song listed below. Funny mess I tell you. It feels good to be me again and be able to do the work I love to do. For some time I have been assigned to locations where the customer was overly obsessed about their image and wanted the people that work for them to follow a code of crap that only applied to them. Glad I’m not there anymore. I love being me and the wild stuff I design. So what could I possibly be designing that is inspired by a sexy can I chipmunk remix. Wait and see. All I can say is I am bringing the mayhem back up in here and lovin it.

Is Brown The New Prada?

You may not like what I am about to say here but Dr. Laura kinda started this so blame her OK.

I did not want to write this trend report but a loved one was just at a rally about this topic, I was sent some very troubling links in regard to this topic, and I keep being asked about this topic so hear we go.

DO YOU CULTURE HUMP? WHAT IS CULTURE HUMPING?

Culture humping is the over selling or mass popularization of a trend based on someone’s culture. We are currently getting over our last overly humped cultural trend (harajuku) and moving on to our next culture victim, Africa. African cultural products are everywhere and I like it, it’s nice, but what will we do with it when it’s no longer cool. Bubble tea is currently on the do not drink list along with the non-consumption of cupcakes. Do you mean to tell me that my favorite foods are no longer cool and therefore I can no longer eat them? Seems so because bubble tea stores are going out of business over hear in NYC and cupcakes, well…make them yourself I guess.

On a small-scale culture humping seems harmless but what about friends as accessories? People you make friends with because their culture is currently in style. No one admits to this but this does happen. Common sense dictates that you don’t treat people like accessories but people don’t always conduct themselves in a common sense way. In addition, what do you do when the culture you are currently humping just happens to be one of the most historically unpopular cultures of all time, Africa?

Now wait…work with me here because I am going somewhere with this. With a hostile economic environment and a half African American president as our leader is it fair to state that this is probably one of the worse times for fashion to become afrocentric?

Truth be told I just can’t answer that question for the following reasons:

1. I think this whole topic is the worst. We live in the year 2010. I have no chip on my shoulder in regards to my race and neither should anyone else.

2. Race as a deciding factor in competition has (so I have been told) become an issue especially in the art world.

Now understand I don’t feel this way. Mainly because I deal with so many wonderful people all the time and I never feel slighted but their are times when someone decides to ask me something so inappropriate that one might have to re-examine whether they are being seen as a human or a chocolate bar.

Scene Opens:

I was conducting a workshop a while back in downtown NYC when a mid-thirties woman asked me if people feel uncomfortable around me. I replied “how so”? She stated that as an African American woman, with an Indian name, spinning cotton on a charka it’s like you are the walking history book no one wants to read.

Everyone was mortified but I thought it was funny. LOL FOREVER! I told her that I am so far removed from the history of cotton and charka that it’s just a tool and fiber to me. Though I appreciate the history behind these objects I fully understand that it’s just that…history. I just wish everyone else could just understand this as well.

So in conclusion don’t be afraid to rock a dashiki (don’t expect me to join the party on that one) or purchase that afro-infused handbag you have been lusting over but if you have the urge to learn Swahili and your not heading out to the mother land maybe your taking culture humping a bit too far.

Change Can Be Good

We finally started to make this bloggy spotter what it is intended to be. An online store. Yes I, Sajata-E decided to create a online store powered by blogspot.com . Now we know there are other blogspot stores out there but this will be different. This is the only place where you can look at our style pages, watch SAJATA-E TV, view our studio machines at work, buy our products without signing up for any accounts (this includes paypal), and learn how to create some really cool stuff via patterns and how-to’s.

This was a very important move for me. Having everything in one place plus easy shopping has become hard to do in the internet world. You have to create an account for just about every site you visit and you have to click on a whole lotta links just to get where you need to go. Here, you just have to click once or twice and have a credit card. Cool right. I mean come on how many accounts do you need anyway? How many accounts can you remember?

SAJATA-E FOR D2BD is the only online shopping site where you can shop, read cool stuff, and feel like a kid again without reverting back to childhood. We don’t do grumpy, sad, commercial design. Everything here is whimsical, funny, and real. If I put a smile on your face when you logged on then I did my job well.

I Wanna Marvel!

It is 1:00 am and I am working on a video design piece that I hope will be done by October. Fueled by coffee and ambivalence I have stopped to write this article about my need to marvel. You see, nothing and I do mean nothing surprises me anymore. I do not feel jaded or pessimistic just excepting of the norm. Whatever the norm might be at that time.

Here is an example:

One day last week I was in Brooklyn on a business run when I came across a man with an easel and a paintbrush working on what I guess was his art in the middle of a busy intersection of the street. I was a bit lost so I walked up to him and asked him for directions in which he replied, “I don’t stand here to give directions”. Now understand living in NYC long enough you can identify the locals (he was one) and he was standing in the middle of the street painting a picture not of the landscape but of some lady who by the way was not modeling for him at the time. I meant no harm and thought to myself “ask him for directions because he’s just standing there”.

Any who, flash forward two hours later after someone overheard the convo and gave me directions to me once again walking past the same guy still standing there painting only I notice something new. Traffic had picked up and the tourist where out and about. As people began to walk past him, he became increasingly annoyed. See they where taking pictures of everything accept him. Some even asked him to please move so they could take photos of themselves standing in the same spot he was standing in. Did he fancy himself a tourist attraction and became angered when no one liked his interpretation of Picasso? Who knows! I just know that I was not surprised and cared less about his parasitic narcissism. Neither did anyone else. It was a good day and we all lived happily ever after.

OK back to the marveling. I want…no wait…I need to marvel. I need to look upon something or someone with the knowledge that greatness does exist. This is a hard one for me due to the fact that most people marvel at things that I truly don’t understand. I wish to be floored by the bravery of a symbolic situation in which someone does something or creates something that most people would be too afraid to do or create. Now understand I do not wish to be shocked. There is a difference. I wish to encounter a situation where someone without any egotism did something or created something worthy of marveling. This thing does not have to be big or expensive. It just has to challenge the human thought process and dare to exist with or without mass approval. Now understand there are artist that place cola cans on pedestals, call it modern art, invite people to look at it and expect them to marvel. This is not what I want. I want to see the renewal of a truly independent thought that isn’t influenced by social political correctness or the anticipation of acceptance into a group or social setting.

Think about it. Not that easy right? In order to create such a situation or thing you would first have to get over yourself. You would have to truly understand that the creation of this situation or object does not make you a god worthy of people worshiping at your feet. If praise were to follow such an event it would only be a small by-product compared to the actuality of the creation of the marveled situation or object.

I have placed a lot of thought within this endeavor. I will also not search for anything to marvel. It only leads you down a path to disappointment. Instead, I will leave myself open to be floored.

I Really Do Love Lucy

I have written about Lucy, my spindle spinning wheel lots of times. What I have not done is write a pattern for Lucy…and I’m not going to. My love for Lucy runs too deep and I just can’t bring myself to write a pattern for her. I designed and built Lucy with my two little hands without any power tools. Total Flintstone like behavior. Many a times I tried to not only write a pattern for Lucy but also figure out how to copyright this pattern properly but with no luck. The average person would have to use power tools to build the Lucy Wheel and they would have to pay way more for the creation of this wheel when in reality their are very affordable wheels out there at this point in time.

Anyway I am writing about her again for two reasons:

1. Prices for yarn are going up. Sorry but the introduction price for our handspun designer yarn will end and the real price will be posted soon along with a nice page about how the yarn is made, what tools are used, and custom design pricing. The price is not going up by much so no worries.

2. My original article was deleting along with many other articles when I started re-designing the site.

Hopefully I will be able to post patterns by the end of the week so stay tuned.

Oh and by the way “Lucy” is made of scrap wood and part of our green movement. We are slowly moving toward 100% recycled packaging but if we do this too fast before the holiday season it would devastate us. More info about that also soon to come.

Kick A Smurf... Burn in Hell. A Humanitarian Thought Process

I had this whole article written up about humanitarianism, right and wrong, good vs. evil, blah, blah, blah. I’m too tired to go to deep. Look, kicking a smurf is wrong plain and simple. Why the smurfs reference? Well it stems from a convo I had with someone about art imitating life and how we can learn a lot from silly simple things like the smurfs. Long story short, the gargamel’s of the world will always find justification for the destruction and persecution of the smurfs. Applied to real life, bad people will always hunt, seek, and try to destroy good people. Seems pretty simple right!

Any who, I was trailing the interwebs when I came across a time capsule about Manny’s Closet. What’s Manny’s Closet? It’s one of the first stores I designed for back in the 90’s that was a fave for stylist in NYC. I have never been a commercial designer so Manny’s Closet was a perfect fit for me. Mainly known for their club wear Manny’s Closet caught the attention of the night life/club scene fairly quickly. I was and still am a bohemian Avant-Garde designer so Manny’s Closet had a special place in my heart for all things unique and original.

The Beauty Within the Destruction

I was putting together my storyboard when I decided to take these pictures of an abandon railroad station by the waterfront in my hood. They spent over nine million on the waterfront but left this alone as a testament to old school NYC. Thank goodness. I love this railroad house. You can still see the original paneling on it. Sometimes I walk by and wonder what it was like back in the day.

This house is so beautiful to me I just can’t stand it. It does freak me out to know how old it is and trains are still traveling underneath it without anyone fearing it’s total collapse.

The history behind this station can be found at forgotten-ny.com and they even took pictures of my favorite count Dracula house. That’s not really what it’s called but I call it that.

Cherry Corriedale…

We have added a new color to our collection of handspun yarn. Cherry is now available. The bamboo will be available on Friday. I have gotten a lot of help on this collection and I am totally thankful. You would think that a handmade product would be simple to produce but you couldn’t be more wrong. This is why we have mass-produced products. I do everything possible to make sure that every product I create is produced on a local level supporting only smaller businesses and making sure the animals that I get my fiber from are well taken care of while keeping my prices fair and affordable.

This is not a easy task. Smaller productions of made in the USA products usually lead to higher prices in a economy where people can’t afford higher prices. Lucky for me I deal with a lot of companies that follow the same goals and ideals that I do. Support on a smaller level and keep people employed.

Lot’s of people think that the purchase of a cheap mass produced product is harmless and economical. Well maybe you will think differently after watching this video. This is just one of the video’s I could stomach enough to talk about let alone watch in it’s entirety. Don’t get me started on how a $10.00 shirt is produced.

I Wanna Be Here!

I so badly want to be outside enjoying the NYC activities but I can’t. The bamboo came in so spinning and packing fiber is what I must do. I work in the weirdest location right now. A place that used to be known for hookers and creeps is now a place where anyone with a boat license can launch their boat from any available urban water front pad.

It’s cool I tell you.

And speaking of cool, the BANKNOTE building is almost complete. If you don’t know what the banknote is than you don’t know NYC. By this time next year it’s gonna be hard to drive up here.

No Love For A Cubicle

OK, so it seems like sajata-e will be working out of her cubicle for awhile. Their will still be design shows and workshops available but for the next six months or so “THE CUBICLE” will be the base for all things sajata-e. A few product launches and writing will be and must be done there. Truth be told I have no love for a cubicle. It makes me feel pinned up and the monotony of working in the same place, at the same time, for the same hours tends to get to me.

Oh well, no complaints here. Things must get done.

I do want to redecorate my cubicle hell but can’t seem to figure out what I want. It has to be functional, free flowing, well lighted, and fun…don’t forget fun.

We have just released two new yarn colors/styles. We are starting to upload color blended yarns in both boucle and lace weight styles. These wool yarns are so cool and I can’t wait for the bamboo fibers to show up here. The patterns are also on the way so keep checking back. The fall 2010 clothing line will premiere when the new official store opens up in late August. Any clothing and accessories you find in our other stores will be from our past collections or from our Junior’s Line.

We are focused on the patterns due to the holiday season coming soon. People have been requesting patterns so they can make their own gifts this year.

Fall, Bunnies, 3D, and Gandi

Hello everyone,

Fall is approaching quickly and I am hard at work trying to re-stock with the fall collection. We spin it like Gandi over here at the SAJATA-E FOR D2BD Studio. If you don’t know what that means just look at the video and check out the Charkha she is spinning on. Mines is smaller and made from recycled wood materials. It’s so peaceful to spin on one of these.

New fall colors will be posted on Friday and patterns will start to appear in August.

In other unrelated fashion news I am totally into scary movies right now. I can’t wait for Halloween and I can’t seem to understand why they refuse to make The Exorcist in 3D. Can you imagine some of those scenes in 3D. It’s enough to make you wet yourself. It would be so cool to look at.

Anyway I found this site called angry alien.com filled with 30 second little bunny remakes of our favorite movies including The Exorcist. It’s funny I tell you. Watch and Enjoy.

Keep It Simple

Hi everyone,

Hoping the heat wave on the east coast is treating everyone OK. We are over here working on our fall series of knitting patterns entitled “ Keep It Simple”. It’s a collection of patterns that focus on design and not fancy stitches. The basics of knitting have become lost in a shuffle of fancy over done stitches that have been modified, reproduced, and reprinted by designers everywhere. I am hoping to counter that by creating patterns that focus on construction and materials rather than fancy stitching.

Seamless one piece knitting is something I wish more knitters could do better and we want to focus on this. The picture above is the start of a bulky seamless handbag pattern made from sunny yellow I-cord yarn we made ourselves. I-cord yarn can be time consuming to create so we brought a I-cord machine to create mass quantities of the stuff. A fancy version of I-cord use will be presented in our designer collection coming soon.

Product testing and little kits of wonder

So yesterday I spent the better part of it packing up design kits and designing new natural dye bath colors. Product testing is really essential for natural dye baths. You have to find out how many washes the product itself can go through before color fading begins. Currently we are working with mohair and copper worth fibers.

In case you have not noticed we use mostly earth tones in most of our products. I find earth tones to be relaxing and functional.

Hate Modern…Love Industrial

Hey Guys,

I don’t know why but I totally hate modern design. It’s sterile and you don’t have to think much while looking at it. Totally hate it.

I am into industrial design. Really, really love it. So not into going full industrial yet but a little touch here and there is just fine for me. A great way to incorporate industrial design into your life is to convert coffee cans into storage space. Paint them really cool colors and place them around your living or working space.

I personally like using them without deco. Super fun to look at and it makes you think.

We are gearing up for a major ad blitz so if you get tired of seeing our logo please don’t hate us for it. It’s just business. Have not decided if we are going back on tour again. Sajata is tired and I can’t get much done while on tour. The online magazine fell apart while on tour and it will be up and running again before the holiday season. The format is changing a bit on the video magazine and I am looking forward to how it comes out.

Prince Made The Doves Cry…and now the internet

OK, LOL, Really I was not going to say anything about the purple fashion icon but I can’t help it.

MUST TALK NOW!

To sum up the whole controversy, Prince thinks the Internet is over. He really does feel this way. Prince has no official website, does not want his work released over the inter-webs and really does not care for the whole digital age. Why is everyone so angry at Prince for his “ PERSONAL STANCE ” on this matter.

Because it’s the Internet and if you express even a bit of truth on the nets evil lab top gangsters will put out a total hit on you. They will type you dead via keyboard anger. Is he right? Is the Internet dead?

Not really but truth be told the flood waters are rising, content is starting to suck, and a change is gonna come. Really, it's true.

I lived through the first dot-com bust and it was a bitter pill to swallow. People are flooding the nets with useless content making it hard to find good content over the net. This has caused companies to change how they release content to consumers. People who choose to flood the net are nowhere to be found and real content is being featured on major websites.

FREE vs. PAID CONTENT

OK this is a hard topic because this is the major upset currently under discussion. In a nutshell people are always going to look for free stuff on the net. This is probably why Prince made the Internet cry in the first place. Prince want’s to be paid for his work and people don’t want to pay for it, but they do want to steal it! If he’s such a has been why would you want to steal his riffs and pirate his content.

Please, just stop.

Tell the truth to Prince so you can get what you really want.

Hello, I am a big fan. Well not really. You see I want to be a fan but you won’t let me steal from you. I went on youtube and heard some of your pirated content and thought it was good. But I want more. Why won’t you make it easy for me to steal your work? A really good artist with a huge fan base allows people to steal like crazy. You could learn a thing or two from them Prince.

Stores and Products and Fun...cool

Hello,

I have officially started uploading products into my online stores. We will start off with hand spun yarns and pattern kits then work our way back to clothing and accessories. If you see any clothing in the store it's past seasonal on sale items and not the 2010 fall collection. Yarns and kits will be from the 2010 collection. Little hint (we will pack free cool stuff with every online purchase).

Hello everyone.

Well needless to say it is super hot in NYC and we are doing everything we can to reduce our electricity use as well as get everything up in running on time. We FINALLY found a e-commerce cart we can live with. One might wonder why we have had so much trouble with a online shopping cart. Please don’t get me started on this topic but if I must explain, here is the short version of this topic.

As a company you can purchase a shopping cart, design your own shopping cart, or use a online shopping mall as a store front. Here are the pros and cons of all the options listed above:

Purchase your shopping cart.

Pro- Everything is set up and all you have to do is install it.
Con- There is NO guarantee that you or anyone else will like this cart. You already paid for and installed this cart onto your hosting site. Now you must uninstall this cart and start all over again.

Design you own shopping cart.

Pro- You designed it and you like it. Great for you.
Con- You must fix whatever might go wrong with this cart (bug fixes) plus once again you don’t know how anyone else will feel about this cart. How much work will you have to sink into this cart before people feel safe while shopping .

Online mall as your official store front.

Pro- Customers are already shopping at this mall.
Con- So many cons I can’t even take the time to list them all but if I must name a few, read below.

1. What kind of customers are shopping at this mall and why. This info is very important.

2. Branding issue. Most online malls are interesting in branding their company-NOT YOURS. Like all stores and malls you have very little input on how your company is representing in their store. You don’t like how your product is being sold. Pull your product. Plain and simple.

Anyway we have a new one and it’s really good. It should be up and running shortly. In the meantime I will be stocking our Etsy store with some really cool and affordable products by Friday the latest.

Also please sign up for our email list. If you think you are already on the list, think again. We got rid of our last e-mail list and started our list again with a clean slate. This was all in the name of cleaning online house so please understand.

Hello everyone,

As you know by now I am a super doc fan. I love docs, have been a co-star in a doc, and would be in another doc if I could. Movie Star vs. Doc Star? NO CONTEST....Doc stars rock all the way.

I am currently writing a heap load of articles as well as getting ready for a massive sale and inventory unpacking. One my first articles will be on this topic and how it relates to fashion and competition.

Work, The Internet, and One Human

OK everyone, so I have not been blogging, posting, or anything on the internet for a while now. So many reasons why plus so many reasons why I can’t talk about it. Let’s just say a lot is going on with little time to figure it all out. Many projects have been put on hold or in the process of a re-design.

Business is a tough process and the bulk of my business is private cliental so it’s been hard. What’s been put on top of my list of things to do is writing for the public (this is at the request of the public of coarse) and a DVD style workshop that is in the production process.

Many of my online stores are out of stock due to this process and for that I am deeply sorry. I have hopes for re-stocking my stores within the month of August so fingers crossed.

In the meantime you can watch the video that got the whole ball rolling. It’s silly and for some reason people love it. I am glad it gives people joy as well as a learning experience. This video has been viewed and written about thousands for times.
